Good Rebel Vegan Haul - Pt. 1
I am the only vegan in my house. Mind you, there is only my husband and I but, he is definitely a meat and potatoes guy and he doesn't really like potatoes.
For the last several years, I have been on the look-out out and trying/testing different vegan food options to have at home. I love the idea of vegan meal and specialized food delivery services and have tried quite a few.
Without pointing fingers or dragging a Canadian small business(es) through the mud, I haven't been able to find one that I could stick with for any length of time for one reason or another. I will say, if you have more than 1 vegan in your house, Savor Living almost always knocks it out of the park. The servings are just too large for little old me and, I grit my teeth when I admit this, I end up throwing good food away because I can't eat it fast enough.
So more research and I decided to browse all the amazing vegan options offered by Good Rebel Vegan, a Toronto based vegan grocery store, made a huge "wish list" order (that came close to $500), deleted some options, got the total under $300 and clicked "place order".
I'm going to review some of the items - how I ate them, what they cost, what I liked/didn't like and would I buy them again. So here goes:
I ordered the 'Gusta' Tuna Flavoured (love that flavoured is spelt with a "U" - definitely a Canadian company) Plant-Based Flakes. I paired it with some 'From the Ground Up' Cauliflower Everything Veggie Snacking crackers for my lunch yesterday.

My lunch - which there is still plenty left of
My thoughts:
- The tuna is high in fat (15g) but has 20g of protein, per 1/2 package. I'm unable to eat a whole half package in one sitting so overall, I think I'm okay with this option. Does it taste like tuna? Of course not, silly. It has a similar texture and is not unpleasant but I think to use it as you would in a sandwich, you'd have to add mayo to get it to stick together a bit more and that would definitely up the amount of fat. Would I pay $5.99 again for it? Maybe. It's leaving a bit of a funky after-taste that I don't love. I think it would go better in a pasta salad.
- The crackers are tasty. Definitely make the tuna more palatable. A serving is 16 and I think I ate a few less than that (however I could easily eat the whole bag if I don't get them off my desk). 2g of fat, 330mg of sodium (not bad-they don't taste too salty which is a pet-peeve of mine) so overall, a good lunch. I should have thought to add either some cucumber slices or maybe grape tomato slices to get some veggies in but there are veggies in the crackers 😉 I'd buy these again. I'm a cracker girl and these are not too salty and are super crunchy, which I love.
- Total of $12 - I'd get 2, maybe 3 lunches from this so I can definitely appreciate a $4-$6 lunch especially since I'm going to watch The Jays tonight and will probably have a bag of $10 popcorn and a $15 sip of wine.
